Philadelphia in Color, 1950-1990

Hidden City Philadelphia is in the early stages of a book project, Philadelphia in Color, 1950-1990.

We are gathering color photos of Philadelphia from a wide variety of sources, including newspapers, university and museum archives, community groups and the general public to create a color portrait of the city during these decades.

Do you have color photos of Philly that you’d consider including in our book?

Should you have images that are not digitized, no problem. We can scan slides, prints, and negatives, and work out the best way to hand off the materials.

See above slideshow for images that are representative of the book’s content, but this is essentially what we’re looking for in the photos:

  • Taken between 1950 and 1990 in Philadelphia
  • Shot in color – no colorization of black & white photos!
  • Exterior shots only
  • Feature people and places interacting
  • Street life
  • Slice-of-life
  • Areas in transition
  • Places and cultural touchpoints that don’t exist anymore

We expect to publish summer 2026.
