Inside-Out Mural & Mosaic Tour–West of Broad

June 24, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

$20 Hidden City members (Use coupon code HIDDEN at checkout)
$25 General Admission

We’ve teamed up with Mural Arts to create a tour that explores the many dimensions of Philadelphia’s wall art by looking at murals both old and new, indoors and on the street, created by Mural Arts and commissioned by others.

Some of Philadelphia’s most historic murals are hiding in plain sight, waiting to be discovered. They once graced many of the city’s most magnificent Gilded Age mansions and department stores, and several of them have survived even as the buildings were adapted to new uses. One lovely specimen we’ll visit is now a CVS drugstore; another is an upscale clothing store and a third is now a restaurant.

We’ll also take a look at several recent pieces of public art created under by Mural Arts whose with a social and political message stand in stark contrast to these decorative historic murals including The Stamp of Incarceration: Amira Mohamed by Shepard Fairey, on the Race Street Friends Meeting House, which has a remarkable history in its own right.

The tour will be led by Hidden City Project Director Pete Woodall and Mural Arts Tour Program Manager Nancy Davis.

The tour will start and end at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (128 N. Broad Street)
