University City and Center City: tantalizingly close to each other, yet separated by a river, a highway, train tracks and a massive rail yard. After generations of talk about somehow knitting these two powerhouse neighborhoods closer together, the process of transitioning the divided area into one (semi)-cohesive unit has finally begun in earnest. Join GroJLart, foul-mouthed creator of the blog PhilaPhilia, for a guided walk that loops around the Center City-University City Connection.

This tour is a little different than Groj’s previous ones. He’ll still tell you about the past and present of pretty much every damn building along the route, but there’ll also be a healthy dose of land use and planning history as well as a look at what Drexel and the University of Pennsylvania’s future plans for their respective cities within a city. We’ll start at the southwest corner of 23rd and Walnut and loop all the way over and around the Schuylkill River using the bridges in between. Prepare for some bridge-walking and stair-climbing! As with all of GroJLart’s tours, even the most obsessive Philadelphia-philes will learn new things about the city they love.

We’ll meet on the southwest corner of 23rd and Walnut and set off from there.
