Philadelphia boasts several hundred community gardens, and each of them has a story to tell. Join the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Jeff Barg to learn how a half dozen of the most interesting of these green oases came to be. This 7.5 mile bike tour will be in held in conjunction with the 3rd Annual Community Gardens Day, a citywide celebration organized by the Neighborhood Gardens Trust.

Here’s what’s on tap:

• La Finquita, (428 W. Master Street) means “The Little Farm” in Spanish, a term of endearment from the local Puerto Rican community in South Kensington for this community farm and garden, which was started in 1988.

• Seedy Acres (918-922 N. Leithgow) is a preserved garden well-hidden on tiny Leithgow Street in now densely developed Northern Liberties.

• Spring Gardens (18th and North Street) is a crown jewel in the Philadelphia community garden landscape located just north of Center City.

• Schuylkill River Park Garden (25th and Spruce) Created on the site of a former brickyard and B&O Railroad Siding, this 70- plot garden was created in 1988 and was placed the Smithsonian Institutions’s Archives of American Gardens in 2007.

• Keith Haring and Concert Gardens, are two Point Breeze community spaces that highlight the Philadelphia’s tradition of creating murals in concert with community gardens to cultivate a distinct and unique sense of place.

• 2000 Fitzwater (2042-44 Fitzwater).  An NWF Certified Wildlife Habitat, this award-winning garden is frequently visited by butterflies and has an active beehive.

The tour ends at the Community Gardens Day Celebration at the 15th and South Street Pop Up. A light lunch will be provided,  plus there will be music, raffles and more.
