There is nothing in Philadelphia quite like Alden Park, a trio of apartment buildings in a park-like setting that architectural historian George Thomas called “an American version of the visionary ‘Radiant City’ of Le Corbusier.” Designed in the Jacobean Revival style by Edwin G. Rorke, the apartments represented the height of modernity and luxury when they were built on the East Falls estate of Justus Strawbridge in the late 1920s.

Developer L3C Capital is just finishing up a $70 million restoration, which won a 2018 Grand Jury Award from our co-hosts, the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia. This tour is a chance to check out Alden Park’s original details, including its stunning tiled pool, three lobbies, and a ballroom with bird’s eye views of Center City and the Wissahickon.

Bob Powers, architectural historian and President of Powers & Co. a consulting firm specializing in historic buildings, will talk about Alden Park’s history. He’ll be joined by Construction Superintendent Cassie O’Connell, who will delve into some of the nitty-gritty details of restoring the masonry, replacing almost 7,000 windows and bringing the original wood and plaster work back to life.

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience one of Philadelphia’s most iconic places–and one of the largest restoration projects in recent memory!

This tour is co-hosted by Hidden City and the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia
