Everything is illuminated. The Historical Commission’s new map puts properties on the local Register of Historic Places in geographical context.

The Philadelphia Historical Commission launched their new Philadelphia Register of Historic Places interactive map today. View it HERE. The site highlights individual local register properties and districts with the names, addresses and designation dates of each structure and is a welcome upgrade from the previous historic registry PDF data source on the Historical Commission’s website.

The map was created by the Streets Department’s GIS staff under the direction of the Historical Commission and is currently online in beta form. Jon Farnham, executive director of the Historical Commission, says that the map is still under review and, as it is further developed, mistakes may be present. “We will eventually have the City IT people update our website to locate the map on the Register page,” says Farnham. The Philadelphia Register lists over 3,000 designated historic places and includes buildings, structures, objects, interiors, sites, and districts.
