  • In yet further confirmation of modern criminology’s Broken Windows Theory, Philly Voice relates the findings of a study undertaken by University of Pennsylvania and Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine: there exists a clear statistical correlation between modest home repairs to abandoned buildings and reduced neighborhood crime. Conducted in light of the enactment of the “Doors and Windows Ordinance” (which imposes a daily $300 fine for every structural opening without doors or windows that a house has on sufficiently occupied city blocks) from January 2011 to April 2013, the study recorded a 39% decrease in “gun assaults around remediated buildings within the year following improvements.”
