An Emergent 40th Street

  • PlanPhilly reports on Mayor Nutter’s continuing struggle to scrounge up as much federal money possible to improve the city’s infrastructure. On Thursday, the mayor visited the construction site of the 40th Street Bridge, where he thanked the workers. One of Amtrak’s busiest nodes within Philadelphia, the bridge’s renovation budget is comprised of about 80% federal dollars.
  • University City Review looks at the community’s involvement (and its perception of a lack therefore) in transforming the 40th Street corridor. Harris Steinberg, head of Penn Praxis, has been leading the community’s efforts to decide on seven goals for the street, which really only constitute “strategies the community can refer to when development projects are proposed.”
  • The Inquirer stops by Hunting Park’s 3600 block of North Marvine Street, where residents led by Lawrence Burgess have come together in recent months to clean up their street, winning Friday night’s “clean block” award from the city. Simple efforts were enough to create something “more like a fellowship” within Marvine’s community.
