City as Salvage

  • Provenance is a company dedicated to “unlocking the value of salvaged materials” from our architectural past. Part warehouse, part consulting group, the Northern Liberties based company is sponsoring a DesignPhiladelphia event—“Designing and Building Reclaimed,” an examination of the adaptive reuse in three parts: discussion, presentation of their efforts with the Barnes Foundation, and tour. Tomorrow night, from 5PM to 8PM. Disclosure: Provenance is co-owned by Hidden City Philadelphia board member Bob Beaty.
  • The Daily News reminds us the Royal Theater at 15th & South Streets—the first of its kind run by African Americans, is still languishing. Soul mogul Kenny Gamble bought the property with the help of a city subsidy as part of his Universal Companies’ plan to revitalize the neighborhood. For many neighborhood residents, the theater is simply a “taxpayer-funded blight,” while others take solace—seeing it as a buffer from gentrifying G-Ho.
